Milking with the Minotaur Review

Thank you NetGalley, Love Out Loud Press, and Cassandra Medcalf for the Audio ARC in exchange for an honest review of the content.

In “Milking with the Minotaur” our FMC Betsy is abandoned by the father of her babe and King of the Gods, Zeus. This leaves Betsy and her new born in a bit of a pickle, because her body can not produce what the little demigod needs to survive. So, Hera comes up with a creative solution: send Betsy to live with the exiled minotaur Felix. Her hope is that Felix will be able to teach Betsy about her newborn minotaur babe.. and do what needs to be done to increase her milk supply. Will Betsy and Felix agree to do what needs to be done to provide for the babe? There’s only one way to find out..!

Now, my review..

The positives:

  • I am always hesitant when the author of the book is the narrator of the audiobook, but Cassandra Medcalf and Jack Calihan knocked this narration out of the park. Cassandra in particular was great about doing different voices for different characters, and Jack had the perfect voice for a monster romance.
  • The audio and book content was engaging, and I definitely was not bored when listening to this content.

The negatives:

  • I am a LOVER of monster romance, and this is the first one I’ve ever read that made me… well uncomfortable. I am not someone who has triggers, so I never read the trigger warnings, but personally, I have found my limit. This book felt like it bordered on beastiality. Betsy loved all the cowlike features that Felix had, and the way that certain things were described I found myself verbally yelling “ew” more than once. In most monster romances I’ve read, they typically are very humanoid and act like humans. But here we see Felix eating out of a bowl like it’s a feeding trough, no utensils in his home, using the restroom in the field, etc.
  • Without giving spoilers, I did not love the way this book ended. I know it was intended to show growth in the main characters and give them more purpose. But with the background that was given for the FMC Betsy, I think I was hoping for something different for her.

In general, I unfortunately did not love the content of this book, but also understand that many people love the story that Cassandra Medcalf wrote and performed. I think that Cassandra is a great writer and is good at keeping her audience engaged in the story. But, ultimately the way this story was executed is just not for me.
