Chosen Review

Chosen, book two of the Nightmare Misfits series, picks up right at the cliff hanger Destiny left us on. After bursting into flames, and becoming something that was believed to not exist anymore, everything changes for Nova and her cluster. Now on the run and looking for a safe place to land, Nova’s bonded must keep her safe while also going through changes of their own.

Now, my review..

The positives:

  • We learn more about the magic system in this book, not as much as I would like but it was a vast improvement from the first book. We get a deeper dive into the marks, the different houses and what it all really means.
  • The evolution of the different relationships within the cluster was fun to read about. Nova definitely has her hands full with six men, but they all yearn to cater to her and do not expect anything in return. I loved seeing the different ways she connects with each MMC.
  • I enjoyed seeing the different animal forms each of the main characters shifted into at different points in the book. None of the shifts were what I was expecting for their corresponding character.
  • I loved the community that was built in this book. When looking for a safe haven the cluster finds a group of people just like them, people who feel like they don’t belong anywhere in this system. This is the first time we see others like them in this series, and I think it was pivotal for the characters’ exploration of themselves and their relationships.

The negatives:

  • The spicy scenes with the different men are well done, but my issue with them is there is never really any build up. Almost every time she even kisses one of them for the first time they always have to bang it out immediately. For a girl who was a virgin in the first book, it just feels like more “bases” would be hit before they immediately resort to sex.
  • I still feel like we are missing quite a bit of information about how the magic system works. I really wish this is something that would have been well thought out and explained in the first book so that everything that followed was easily understandable and not leaving me with questions that don’t really need to be hanging questions. The vagueness does not seem to be for the point of keeping it a mystery for the plot.

Overall, as much as I dislike the lack of information and world building, I do quite enjoy these books. They are really entertaining, a fun and engaging read that makes me want to keep following this series. Chosen was definitely a step up from the first book, Destiny. I hope that the series continues to trend this way. Order, the final book of the Nightmare Misfits series releases on July 3rd, and I already have it pre-ordered and will be diving in immediately.
